Germany's World Cup campaign came to a shocking end on Monday (Jun 29) in Foxborough, as Paraguay knocked out the four-time champions 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the round of 32. It is the first time in World Cup history that Germany have lost a penalty shootout.
The round of 16 match ended 1-1 after extra time. Paraguay had gone in front when Julio Enciso scored on a header late in the first half. Kai Havertz equalized in the 52nd minute for four-time champion Germany.
